From Molecules to Minds: My Journey as a Teacher

This teacher’s day, we at Kanakia International School are honourned to share some of the most inspiring stories from our dear mentors & educators who put in hours of hard work teaching valuable lessons to our aspiring learners.
Penned below is an inspiring entry by our much-admired IGCSE Co-ordinator from Kanakia International School – IB, Chembur, Ms. Padmapriya S.V.. In this blog, Ms. Padmapriya shared her story of how her fate made her pursue a career in teaching despite excelling in the respected field of pharma.

“It was those days when I had just graduated from university, with a Master’s degree in hand—ready to embark on an exciting career as a research trainee in a reputed pharmaceutical company. My joy knew no bounds when I received both my degree certificate and my appointment letter on the very same day. Little did I know that this venture would be short-lived. Life had other plans. A move to a new city for personal reasons left me at a crossroads, and I couldn’t just sit at home. I began looking for opportunities, and one particular job advertisement caught my eye—a school, an IB school, was looking for Biology teachers. Though new to the field, the term International Baccalaureate intrigued me. I researched the board, its philosophy, and teaching methods—and instantly fell in love with it. That was the turning point. Since then, there has been no looking back. From starting as a fresher, I grew into a trained and confident teacher, and eventually took up positions of leadership.

Today, I continue this journey with the same passion. The so-called “noble profession” of teaching is no longer an easy one. It requires consistency, perseverance, and, above all, the willingness to constantly unlearn and relearn. Classrooms and their dynamics have changed dramatically over the years, placing innovation at the heart of teaching. Creativity in daily interactions, creativity in understanding Gen-Z, and creativity in building meaningful rapport have become essential.

Yet, no matter how advanced the world becomes, it is still the human touch that teachers bring into a student’s life that keeps this beautiful bond alive. Be it through conventional methods or modern approaches, teaching remains the only profession that guarantees two-way learning—ensuring the growth of both the giver and the receiver. It is this beauty that keeps me going every single day. Irrespective of the challenges and
uncertainties, I continue to enjoy teaching and interacting with students. Their fresh perspectives inspire me, their energy motivates me, and the trust they place in teachers reminds me of the bigger purpose of this calling.
For me, teaching is not just about lessons—it is about hope. It is about reminding young minds that they are not alone, that their teachers are always there as guides, mentors, and cheerleaders. As I write this, I’m grateful to my teachers for showing me the way when I was a student. Whatever I’m today, is all because of their effort and guidance.

On this Teacher’s Day, my heartfelt wish is that every teacher strengthens their bonds with their students. Because in helping them stay connected to their roots, we lay the strongest foundation for their future. And in doing so, we continue our role as true nation-builders.”

Happy Teacher’s Day!
